Gluing The Edges

Gluing The Edges:

The glue stick is a fine innovation but what the creators didn’t anticipate is the mess that happens when you try to apply glue to the edges of a sheet of paper. I place an old newspaper beneath the sheet to prevent accidental gluing of other stuff. InGlue Stick resolves the issue with a clever redesigning of the cap. A slight cut in the cap and an innovative twist-to-open system, allows you to slide a sheet into the gap. I think it’s a problem-solved design! Hurrah!

Work experience student's designs go on sale in John Lewis

Click link to go to actual story:
Work experience student's designs go on sale in John Lewis:

A University of Salford Product Design student has seen his coursework turned into a sales success after his work experience company placed it at John Lewis stores.

Paul Humphreys spent eight weeks on placement at audio visual furniture company Alphason, working one of the designs he'd created during his course into a real product.

Alphason Designs run a live design brief with the University each year and during this project Paul came up with the 'Pebble' TV stand which he worked on with the design team at Alphason in order to simplify manufacture and create a feasible mass produced product for market place.

The design team at Alphason continued the design process of 'Pebble' after Paul left and it has now been launched in to the market with major retailers including John Lewis already having placed firm orders.

Paul said: "This placement was a real eye-opener for me. It took the theoretical work I'd done at Salford and put it into practice. Working with Alphason's design team was a great experience."

His tutor on the BA (Hons) Product Design course is Craig Despard. "Paul's high energy and commitment has resulted in this excellent achievement, something his tutors are very proud of. It also reflects the Product team's emphasis on the employability of our students."

Alphason's commercial director Paul McCarthy said: "At Alphason we are particularly proud of our 'Designed in Britain' label and so we are delighted to foster and nurture the talents of some of the country's young designers in this way. We were delighted with the standard of entries submitted which made judging difficult. But Paul was a clear winner with his Pebble stand."

Organic Jewelry

Organic Jewelry:

Concept X is a conceptual bracelet designed to create jewelry that mixes sensual organic forms with the strength of industrial, almost medical silhouettes. Its curvilinear body and undulating elements form a cincture-like cast – as if it naturally evolved there. The designers believe the evolutionary organic image fits well into modern life. They describe their project as “the re-definition of the spatial order of jewelry”.

Shaped by the pioneering technique of CNC/SLA, the bracelet is cut and welded and then hand-finished to seal the surface and produce a dull galvanized effect.

Age of the Notebook Kitchen?

Age of the Notebook Kitchen?:

The Electrolux Mobile Kitchen Concept combines three basics of modern-day kitchens: a 4-tier induction cooking element, an efficient cutting board and a touchscreen computer for your recipes, downloads and nutrition facts. The placement of the three as a tribute to the laptop makes it a truly portable design. My only concern is the functional relationship between the three. Although the renders make the placement of pots, chopping board and the tablet look synchronistic, but in reality will they hold good? Oil squirts, fumes! Nevertheless, as a camper or travel companion, it fits the bill!

Dumbbells With Strings Attached

Dumbbells With Strings Attached:

The ReCoil is a workout system where you can train with plain dumbbells or up the act with resistant bands. The bands are cleverly coiled up inside each pod so that you can use them in various stances and have a totally customized workout. The pods are detachable and can be screwed onto the specially designed dumbbell or curl bar. I almost forgot, the resistant bands are color-coded and offer different levels of resistance. Superb!

The ReCoil is a 2011 IDEA Awards entry.
