Cute and Functional Combo Tool

I think these would be a bugger to store away.

Cute and Functional Combo Tool: "

If you have ever hit your thumb trying to hammer a nail, you know the unforgettable, mind-numbing pain that follows. This simple Coral Tools combination houses steel flat-head & Phillips screwdrivers within its hard plastic body & also serves as a tripodal stand that holds nails firmly in the center hole to help get them started, ensuring a straight hit while keeping fingers safe. The 3rd arm also holds a corkscrew so you can enjoy some well-deserved wine after all your hard work.

The Solar Sinter

The Solar Sinter: "

With global concern over energy production and raw material shortages increasing, this project explores desert manufacturing as an alternative way to produce items. Set in the Saharan desert, sunlight and sand are used as raw energy and material to produce glass objects using a 3D printing process that combines natural energy and material with high-tech production technology.

Silicia sand, when heated to melting point and allowed to cool, solidifies as glass. This process of converting a powdery substance via a heating process into a solid form is known as sintering and has in recent years become a central process in design prototyping known as 3D printing or SLS (selective laser sintering). These 3D printers use laser technology to create very precise 3D objects from a variety of powdered plastics, resins and metals – the objects being the exact physical counterparts of the computer-drawn 3D designs inputted by the designer. By using the sun’s rays instead of a laser and sand instead of resins, the basis was discovered for a new solar-powered machine and production process for making glass objects that taps into the abundant supplies of sun and sand to be found in the deserts of the world.

The Solar-Sinter machine is based on the mechanical principles of a 3D printer. A large Fresnel lens (1.4 x 1.0 metre) is positioned so that it faces the sun at all times via an electronic sun-tracking device, which moves the lens in vertical and horizontal direction and rotates the entire machine about its base throughout the day. The lens is positioned with its focal point directed at the center of the machine and at the height of the top of the sand box where the objects will be built up layer by layer. Stepper motors drive two aluminium frames that move the sand box in the X and Y axes. Within the box is a platform that can move the vat of sand along the vertical Z axis, lowering the box a set amount at the end of each layer cycle to allow fresh sand to be loaded and levelled at the focal point. Two photovoltaic panels provide electricity to charge a battery, which in turn drives the motors and electronics of the machine. The photovoltaic panels also act as a counterweight for the lens aided by additional weights made from bottles filled with sand.

The machine is run off an electronic board and can be controlled using a keypad and an LCD screen. Computer drawn models of the objects to be produced are inputted into the machine via an SD card. These files carry the code that directs the machine to move the sand box along the X, Y coordinates at a carefully calibrated speed, whilst the lens focuses a beam of light that produces temperatures between 1400°C and 1600°C, more than enough to melt the sand. Over a number of hours, layer by layer, an object is built within the confines of the sand box, only its uppermost layer visible at any one time. When the print is completed the object is allowed to cool before being dug out of the sand box. The objects have rough sandy reverse side whilst the top surface is hard glass. The exact colour of the resulting glass will depend on the composition of the sand, different deserts producing different results. By mixing sands, combinatory colours and material qualities may be achieved.

Important message for all L6 students going to New Designers.

Just to confirm heres the plan. I have spoke to most of you regarding what is set out below so it is just confirmation. We need all your digital work by Tuesday 28th June so we can send out to print. We are playing a very dangerous game to go beyond this. So, you will each be showing 2x (550 wide x 841mm length), one of these is your photographed image which has already been done. The other board is your A3s and development re-arranged.

PLEASE NOTE, YOU DONT HAVE TO CRAM EVERYTHING INTO THIS SMALLER SPACE. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO DROP SOMETHING I WOULD GO FOR YOUR MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING INFO BUT ITS UP TO YOU. REMEMBER YOU ARE COMMUNICATING YOUR MESSAGE, PRODUCT FEATURES AND USER INTERACTION I FEEL ARE CRUCIAL.

So to summarise:
1 x (550x841)Impact image/photo which most of you are happy with as they stand.
1 x (550x841) showing design process and communiacting your product in depth.
100 word (no more) statement/description of your product
Get your portfolio ready also with back up work to this project and also previous project such as RSA.

As you know i am available through multiple channels please speak to me if there are any issues, and it wouls also be nice to see your proposed work just so i can check spellings layout etc.

PS. Well done with your results. We are happy with the high level that has been acheived. just the final 1% to do to close the project and celebrate at the New Designers opening night. (Wednesday 6th July, big parties)

See ya soon

BBC 2 - Tonight - Made in Britain - All about what the country makes!

Who says we don't make anything any more? In the first of a three-part series on how Britain pays its way in the world, Evan Davis busts the myths that we were wrong to let so much of our manufacturing go abroad, and that we have become a nation of shopkeepers, bankers and estate agents.

As he flies in the world's most revolutionary jet and drives one of the world's fastest supercars, he discovers Britain still makes a lot it can be proud of. But post crash, he asks is it enough to meet the country's bills.

Nju Studio's Nifty "Collect, Stack, Set" Stool

Nju Studio's Nifty "Collect, Stack, Set" Stool: "

0njustudisss01.jpg

Years ago I worked for a startup magazine, and we traveled to a prominent college to do a launch event. Sadly, when we arrived we discovered that not only had our event had been poorly publicized, but the college kids were using stacks of our premiere issue (which we'd pre-shipped to them) to prop heavy doors open.

Ego blows aside, the fact remains that piles of magazines do provide weighty stacks of material with consistent dimensions, which ought lend itself to something useful after (or in our case, before) its reading purposes are over.

Analogital Clock?

Analogital Clock?: "

I’m loving this chic, ultramodern wall clock by Raunak Narang!! Clock-o’s simple yet striking design reads like a continuous analog clock but actually processes time digitally. Its minimal LED digital display and seamless ring shape are, on one hand, breaking the stream of time, and on the other, reminding us of its continuity.
